    A walk in the mist

Los Angeles? I'm in LA but that's Louisiana. :) I wish I could drive 90 minutes and have good skies... For astronomically good skies there are certain characteristics the sky should have: High / thin and dry. Down here we're low / thick and moist. Even west Texas at ~5k feet elevation is a...

    A walk in the mist

No, the aurora was the previous week. I was apparently unaware of it and slept through the best display at home.

    A walk in the mist

There were some clear nighttime hours. We were there for five nights, so it's rare to be totally clouded-out. Lots of high cirrus. Since a significant portion of the attendees have been attending for years, it's also a gathering of old friends which is enjoyable. The site (Feliciana Retreat and...

    A walk in the mist

Just got home from the Deep South Star Gaze, which is held in a nice rural setting. Being an astronomy gathering, you know there was gonna be mist and clouds, right??

    I need to catch up...

Another couple of autumn shots from my local area. A (different) friend and I drove about two hours to a potential photo site, but it ended up not so much. It was a pleasant place for a hike in the woods (we walked about four miles) but far too cluttered and close for photography. On the way...

    Autumn color while it lasts

Thanks. We (or at least I) always tend to try for the "picture perfect" trees, etc. but in retrospect I kinda like the half-ragged look of the red tree.

    I need to catch up...

Thanks! My friend had hip replacement a few weeks / months ago and due to some lingering issues we didn't spend quite as much time shooting together as hoped-for but we still had a good run. Hopefully it appears his lingering issues are getting resolved, so that's good, too.

    Autumn color while it lasts

Down here in the deepest of the US Deep South we don't generally get too much fall / autumn color. What we get peaks in mid November and is gone within ~three weeks or so. That is, if the leaves don't turn brown and fall (or get blown) off first. Then it's our typiocally-not-arctic-cold winter...

Thank you! I was trying to keep them realistic, but it's tempting!! :)

    I need to catch up...

This is from the same lake as the last image above. A little shrouded light from a bayou about an hour from home. This was challenging to process, because it was a mix of warm yellow-green light from the sun (off foliage) and cold blue light (from a clear overhead sky). And just this...

    I need to catch up...

I've been distracted from posting here, no real reason why -- Just realized I've not in a while. So here goes!! :p This is gonna be a little bit long... First, a kind of "off the beaten path" image for me. A superwide pano made in the dead of summer heat and light, then turned monochrome with...

Bright, hot, hazy August summer afternoon -- What to shoot?

Yeah, I upload the same file to both places. Thanks!

Bright, hot, hazy August summer afternoon -- What to shoot?

Thanks! During the day the mosquitoes weren't a problem (the heat and humidity were!) but I was shooting from a gravel road atop a levee so there was no foliage really close. I'm sure about twilight it gets really bad, given the low, still and often stagnant water.

Bright, hot, hazy August summer afternoon -- What to shoot?

It's actually the same file uploaded both places but apparently Flickr shows it larger than here. Nature of the beast with elongated aspect ratios I guess.

Bright, hot, hazy August summer afternoon -- What to shoot?

How about a low lake in a wildlife refuge under "bad" light, then turn it almost into winter? At least that's the vibe I get now. I'm not usually a fan of ultra-wide strip panoramas beyond the intrinsic fascination with detail. But it kinda seems to work here. This is "Little Lake", which I...
