Is this the greatest photo ever taken?

I did, of course. But then why did you give the thread the title it has? The only reason I can see, I'm afraid, is the reason that magazines list 'greatest movies' and 'greatest albums': the desire for engagement, for eyeballs. In this case it doesn't matter, but more widely it really does...

There is no greatest photograph: favourite, perhaps.

Gossen Digisix 2 in low light?

I am cursed. The Autometer arrived and is sufficiently accurate. But the spot attachment is for a later version (one of the digital-display ones: the one I have is the last analogue version, which I find easier to read in low light) and won't work with it. The shop (Real Camera in Manchester...

    Theme: Your Bookshelf

The main message I take from this is that I have too many photobooks (this is only one of my stashes of them), and that I'm far beyond the point of being able to organise them in any particular order. Like the best libraries, they're organised by what will fit on the shelves. I'm not sure what...

Gossen Digisix 2 in low light?

After thinking about this I decided that it being always on & hence probably run down, and having a clock (I mean, why: who needs yet another source of the wrong time?) was enough to put me off. So I ordered a Minolta Autometer II with the narrow-angle spot dongle for it. Which will now either...

Gossen Digisix 2 in low light?

Thank you. I have realised that the 'always on' thing is probably going to be a bit annoying as (given that mostly I use cameras which have a metered manual mode, so I will only use it once in a while and it will then be flat...), but I'm still thinking about it.

    Camera Servicing

I'll second Cameratiks. I used to live in Edinburgh but now post cameras from the other end of the country to them. For film Pentaxes Asahi Photo in London are good (he finally fixed my LX which jammed for years and needed a new baseplate).

    Next generation

This is a nice picture. As you say, it's never good to be too rude about 'the youth of today', especially when our generation (I'm 61) has likely burnt their entire future. I think that the interest in old technology is partly because it helps people think of a time there was still a brighter...

Gossen Digisix 2 in low light?

I need a light meter to use in low light (cities at night really) because the Minolta CLE doesn't really have a metered manual mode. I've been using a Weston Master V which is surprisingly OK but its needle has become sticky. I bought a cheap Lunasix which turned out to be cheap for a reason...

Critique Welcomed Chinatown, 10th February 2020, on the cusp of covid

Oh, I'm sorry! They are indeed very saturated and you would absolutely be forgiven for thinking that I'd hyped the colour! I 'm still surprised that, given how much over-saturated digital stuff we see, a straight film workflow can do this. (To be fair, I don't know what the scanner does, but...

Critique Welcomed Chinatown, 10th February 2020, on the cusp of covid

There are two albums on flickr: Lower than the angels is the final selection for the show, and Lower than the angels: first drafts and outtakes is pretty much everything that came out of the scanner, mostly unedited. (I've added the links to the post now.) Something interesting, I think, is...

Critique Welcomed Chinatown, 10th February 2020, on the cusp of covid

Thank you. The final selection for the exhibition is here. Too late to say I picked the wrong ones as they've gone to the printer now!

Critique Welcomed Chinatown, 10th February 2020, on the cusp of covid

Thank you. In fact when I took this first lot of pictures in 2020 it was because it was pretty obvious something nasty was coming. There was an absurd thing where people were avoiding Chinatown because people's parents or grandparents had come from China. So I went to use up the film I had...
