10.5" Cooke Aviar Anastigmat Lens

Made in the 1930s, this British built lens evolved from the aerial reconnaissance lenses used in the First World War and remained in production until the 1950s. The company that made this lens is still in business and is generally regarded as one of the finish manufacturers of cinematography lenses in the world. Many feature films are shot using Cooke lenses including the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They still also make a few large format lenses in small batches and I have their soft focus lens for 5"x4" (Cooke Optics Limited : Products : PS945 Large Format).

An anastigmatic lens corrects the tendency of lenses to focus points of light at the edge of the field of view as lines and arcs. The Cooke Aviar was one of the finest of these designs. Here is an example of one mounted on a Sinar panel on a P2.

When you look at the diaphragm you can see the quality of construction and the near circular aperture it creates.

Never heard of these lenses before, Pete. I went to their website. Special stuff indeed. On the site they say that the vast majority of Cooke lenses ever made are still in use! Wow!
