I'm busy scanning a lot of negatives into Elements 9 to serve as an index for quick retrieval. As you can see from the film examples some need a little attention.

"Dean and daughter..." is really superb! I'm not sure what it is about it but I really like it!
Wonderfully expressive! And great compo!
Really like the Athens one too!
When were they taken?
Is the extra width from the extra width of scanned neg or have you cropped them to a wider ratio?

I think I'm going to enjoy your shots!

Hamish -
Many thanks for the kind words. Dean and Daughter is of my brother Dean and his daughter Anna. It was taken in the mid '70s. I've always liked it, but of course I know and love the subjects. The compo was somewhat accidental, it was a quick shot.

The Athens shot shows my daughter Becky on the left and her mother on the right. Again a lucky shot. To me it conveys loneliness, as they are near, yet looking past each other. I was fortunate to have had no traffic or other pedestrians. Taken in the early '90s.

They are essentially uncropped. I hope to print Dean and Daughter for display on my wall, but I've got to do something about the flaw on Dean's shirt. Grrrrr. No matter how careful one is....

Hi George,

Like Hamish, I too love 'Dean and his Daughter'. Not only is her expression wonderful but the fact that she is framed by the verge and he is framed by the road works beautifully. I barely noticed the flaw until you pointed it out but I guess you do. If you scan the negative / print it should be fairly easy to clone out.

By the way, welcome to the forum! I've been traveling a lot over the last 2 weeks and I think I missed saying that before.

Very expressive portraits, and beautifully composed. Athens, GA is such a magical city, by the way. I love that place - hometown to REM and so many other great bands, too.

Thanks for the kind words.

Darren, Savannah and Athens are my favorite Georgia cities. Athens is small enough to be strongly influence by the University of Georgia, but big enough to avoid being overwhelmed. At about 65 miles from our house it is a favorite weekend getaway venue. Savannah at 200 miles is a bit far for a weekend. If only there were good train connections. When last we looked a train from Atlanta to Savannah went via Washington, DC! and took two days, counting a long layover in the Capitol of our country. Good Lord!
