some of what i've edited so far.

dji mavic 4 pro. a storm passed by a few miles in front of me. i liked how the light was hitting the clouds, rain and hills. i pulled off of i-15 in idaho specifically to fly the drone straight up to shoot over the roadway. i just couldn't get the right angle from the ground.

stopped in a tourist trap town on my way through south dakota with a few old buildings and some fake buildings that had been decorated with old west town stuff. it was a decent place to get out and stretch my legs after 3 days in the car. grabbed this in the blacksmith's shop. fuji gfx 100s ii & 45-100mm

an old car left on the side of the road in south dakota. fuji gfx 100s ii & 45-100mm.

found a canyon north of helena, mt. i drove for awhile along the riverside, stopping to grab photos as i saw them. this was one of my favorites from the day with the light hitting the canyon wall. fuji gfx 100s ii & 45-100mm. cropped to an xpan ratio in post.

an old wooden church found outside helena, mt. no longer used for church services, but still well maintained by someone. taken around sunset. fuji gfx 100s ii & 45-100mm.

same location as the church, sitting to the right of the church and looking south. fuji gfx 100s ii & 45-100mm.

Great photos – they’re all very striking. I really like those clouds and the panoramic views, and also the little church with its concentrated iconic presence. But it’s the two fine circles in the last one, caught in that light, that capture my memory more than anything else. It must have been a wonderful holiday for a photographer like you.

You're lucky that you get to travel as much as you do (I think). I used to get up on Monday, get on a plane and not get home until Friday. It's not as much fun as people think, is it?

thanks gianluca. i've done this trip every year for the past 15 years and i find something to new to explore each year.

i really only get to travel about a month each year. this year i took a ten day trip to florida back in january so i had to settle for a 3 week road trip. travelling is much more fun when it's for personal reasons. i don't think i'd like to travel for work like you did, esp. if there isn't much time to hike, take photos and visit the parks.

That cloudscape is very striking, Beth and I could imagine it would be quite a centre-point if printed large. The light and textures on the arrangement in the blacksmith’s shop work very well (although the anvil distracts a touch I find - how picky can one be?! ;) ).

Old abandoned vehicles always fascinate me, especially when in the middle of nowhere: what is their story one wonders.

What a great idea to crop the shot of the canyon to X-Pan format. Fabulous.

The church is just somehow iconic; have we seen it before? As is the sense of place created by the old hay rake.

I do enjoy your holidays, Beth! :)

The uji gfx 100s ii images have an other worldy feel to them.

Beautiful

thanks pete. it's one of my favorites from the trip.

sorry, i wasn't about to pick up an anvil that weighs more than me and move it. 🤣 but i see what you mean. i wish it was just the saddle on the railing.

the old vehicles are everywhere out west. the trick is finding the ones that are interesting old vehicles, easy to access from the road and hopefully on land where the property owner won't shoot you for stopping. you usually get an idea by how many bullet holes are in the car itself.

i love using the xpan crop. the fuji gfx files are big enough that i'm no longer bothering with panos, i'm just cropping down a single file.

i don't think you've seen that church before, but i've posted several different old churches from the region. the buildings themselves all look the same after awhile. the old hay rake was off to the side of the church.

thanks christopher. the gfx files have great image quality and a dynamic range to play with.
