I recently visited Hill 112, south of Caen in Normandy, and was touched to see a Remembrance Cross placed inside the tracks of a Churchill tank.

Private Paul Selwood of 7 BattalionThe Somerset Light Infantry was killed in action on the 10th July 1944 as he and his comrades fought to capture Hill 112, the highest point for miles around. He was 20 years old.

Vera Selwood has lovingly placed this cross to commemorate her relative and my heartfelt thanks go to him and all who fought for our freedom and especially to Ms Selwood who keeps his cherished memory alive.

RIP Private Selwood. Your duty is done.

Thank you Pete.

It breaks my heart to see the crosses, row on row, and the beautiful, rolling Normandy countryside is host to so many.

This particular hill was ferociously defended by elite SS Panzer, and Hitler Jugend Division troops, who fought with enormous courage and tenacity.

The futility of it all.

I just cannot imagine the horror, of war, that so many where are and will be in . For that alone, for myself it is beyond comprehension what many people endured. We do need written and visual reminders not to go there again.

Thank you Brian.

Thank you Julian...it is vitally important to remember in the hope that we never repeat the mistakes of the past.

But I fear that we will never achieve the peace that all sane men and women desire.
