She did a course on lichen identification, and has been seen getting very close to grave stones and trees ever since. It's fun to watch. Lichen is a good indicator of air quality - the more lichen, the better the air quality. For instance, there was no lichen to be found in the whole of Edinburgh is the 1970s, but is now definitely returning. On a recent trip to the forests of Dunkeld in Perthshire, we were overwhelmed by the amount of lichen. Wonderful.

Certain species were used as a source of colour for some inks used to decorate the Book of Kells though! Susan isn't producing illuminated versions of her dictionaries now is she?!
