I quite like the Alien Skin software filters. These deliberately all have the same frames, to help unify a mini series.

Yes, no need for the frames, and optional. They look great on my iPhone - the frames - but are otherwise not brilliant, I agree. It's funny, all my non photographer friends say, "Wow! Those frames are great!" and say nothing about the images
