I'm a musician, and tend to think it terms of music structures when composing or reading images. It's another of my pseuds-corner things that make people shake their head at me Simply put, there are three main components to music: melody, harmony and rhythm. It's easy to adapt them for the visual arts. I mentioned movement in your image as the leading lines taking us towards the figure are not one continuous line but an equally dissected line, which implies rhythm. If they had been solid lines (as with the long edges of the steps) the eye would move too quickly to the subject, whereas the rhythm takes you there more comfortably...if you see what I mean? Melody, harmony and rhythm are my main compositional aids.
Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation. Despite having a deep love of music and rarely being without it when it's appropriate to do so, I would never claim to actually understand it!
That is a fine composition. Like the contrast in colors between the figure and the background and the way his round figure casts a straight lined shadow, that is strange.
