Aldous, do you think the M9's colors differ from other digitals you may have used? I agree with Gianluca, the colors are stunning.

I think the colors from CCD is more warmer and much better atmosphere than other digitals. I only use old Leica lens on CCD as I think those new lens are just too saturated.

I was surprised you guys think the photos were too saturated. When I retouched images, I had never increase saturation.

@Aldous Lau, I didn't mean to criticise the photos, nor did I suggest that you had edited them to increase the saturation. The colours in these photos are exceptionally vivid, which gives them a special charm. It's just my personal taste that I don't particularly like very saturated colours, especially the blue of the sky.

Nah it's fine. I was surprised because the colors from my main 2K monitor wasn't vivd.

I personally hate saturated colors as well, this is one of the main reason I kept using CCD and old lens.

Are you using the jpg SOOC or are you editing the raw file? I'll have to inventory my cameras to see if I have any CCD sensors. Here is a minor tweak that I did on one of the images (original on left/tweak on the right). Without having been there it is hard to really "know".

It appears that all of my digitals have a CMOS sensor, Leica switched to CMOS with the M10.

The Kodak sensor in the M8 and M9 was developed specifically for Leica. Another camera that uses Kodak CCD sensors is the Pentax 645d.

I only edit raw file from M9 and you're correct for the Kodak sensor. I used to own Pentax 645D as well and I still love the overall atmosphere from the M9 with old lens. 645D is too heavy that I have sold it few years back.

The below is another image without any editing and output from RAW to jpg.

I mainly brighten up the image and increase the shadow details without saturated the colors.

Intersting discussion.

Thanks Aldous! I'm curious about the native sensor characteristics of various cameras. Do you shoot both jpg and raw? I'd be curious to see how Leica processes their raw file into jpg. Don't get me wrong, I think your shots are brilliant, I'm just trying to understand the sensor characteristics.
