Frame by Frame Travel: ARTEMIS

Artemis, the "great mother goddess" was extremely popular in the ancient world. She is related to other Anatolian mother goddesses, like Cybele.
Ephesus is the ancient city state where one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Temple of Artemis, once stood. This fascinating place is located 30 miles south of where I was born and grew up.

More to follow on this magnificent place where many cultures merged.

What a strange image. Those Dalek-like protuberances on her breast have been interpreted (according to a Wiki page) as "multiple accessory breasts, as eggs, grapes, acorns, or even bull testes". So now you know...

Sorry I missed this site when I was in Turkey, Nihat!

There is much debate on what they were. So, I enjoy her as a whole figure. She is also known as the Goddess of Fertility.
Ephesian Artemis is more like an adaptation to Anatolian indigenous civilizations by colonizing Greeks and later Romans.

When I was granted a special permit to photograph her with my camera on a tripod, I felt that the statute had a strange energy zone.

It's worth visiting, Rob. Mother Mary also lived her latter days close by where it is a tradition to visit her house up on the mountain.

Thank you very much, Pete. Indeed, the work has a subtle meditative nature which connects us to our collective past.

What a good photo, Nihat. Nice of them to let you get a shot. Was ALL photography normally forbidden, or just flash photography? And did you seek permission for the picture in advance or after you got there?

Thank you very much, Brian. It was on the spot arrangement by asking permission to talk with the person in charge. All was forbidden, but the museum director knew my grand-father whose name I carry. I did not use flash.
