Thanks Rob. It does look like a bag doesn't it? I hadn't thought of that before. It also has a velvety surface. Very tactile. They normally only open properly when they have been exposed to fire or very intense heat. This has evolved to prevent them competing with the parental stock and they only germinate and grow after a forest fire.
 
Interesting. I've often wondered about that forest fire thing, destruction breeding creation - aesthetically very interesting.
