....when I asked about the light leaks on photographs and I couldn't explain it well enough? Well, I was rummaging through some old photos earlier and I found these beasts! I'm not sure what they were taken on, best bet is to ask Dad because he most probably took them. But does any one have any idea on how to get this effect or even do it with film? Or even with a disposable? Or any other way.... I know that the Instagram app on the iPhone is very similar, not too sure on whether I like it or not but the problem is, I don't have an iPhone anyway...

maybe expired film would turn out like this

Emma all taken with an old Halina, (Maybe still in your loft) the first has been damaged after that's the red on the left..all should be able to recreate in PS but we can also doctor one of my old guys of the shelf to have a slight light leak to play with, wanna give it ago?

Ohhh, I shall give this a go! I always thought once the film had expired, you couldn't use it. Thank you Davie!

No they defo weren't expired, I well remember never buying old filml, didn't have the experience to try such adventurous endeavours back then :D:D

I don't think it's an expired film, got a few photos which are like this which are two pictures together, translucent *waits for someone to spring out some pro name for this*.... I think they are from the same film..

A double exposure - and a damned effective one too. I think many of the effects you are seeing on the old prints are a combination of light leaks in the camera / shutter, flare from the sun adn degradation due to the printing. Many of these older, non-professional colour materials were none too stable and colours changed over time. Also the emulsion layers would stick to each other and be damaged physically when you peeled the prints apart. Quite often the settings on the machines were less than perfect and the prints weren't fixed properly nor washed enough. Still, sometimes, over time, this has yielded interesting results which I guess you can simulate in PS with some coloured layers etc.

I really like the double exposure Emma. Looks very interesting.

The other photos though, I think, are caused by degradation of the images after printing more than by light leaks.
