Crossing the Carpathians

Apart from the last one, the images do render a sense of time has frozen. Indeed, everything is so still, so sleepy, if you want. Nothing is happening and everything is under the spell of the winter. And believe me when I am saying that the people living in those areas are under the same spell...everyone and everything awaits the spring to get busy again.

But I would assume that winter is and does the same everywhere if you live up in the mountains...

Julian these rural mountain villages you have pictured are so evocative of my mental image of Eastern Europe; simple folk living a hardscrabble existence. A fine set of images.

Well, yes, you're right I guess. These places haven't changed that much in the last 100 yrs or so, technology wise. There aren't many like this though, and it is my understanding that they do live under some hardships in those area. Many are under the UNESCO protection, as they disappear like snow in the summer, due to extensive depopulation and industrial development.

That said, some of these must have a certain appeal, as the former Prince Charles (king now) has made his summer retreat property in one of these villages, stripped of (almost) all modern facilities. Apparently, he is thrilled to live there for some weeks as a personal holiday :)

With the new raise in his wages I'm sure he can afford it. 🤨
