Critique Required Failed attempt at capturing smoke

Fist attempt at shooting smoke.. The images aren't sharp at all, Would love some advice on how to improve these! Cheers folks.

Despite the lack of focus I really like number 3 Brodie. Manual or auto-focus?

Thanks, Pete. Umm I tried both out but couldn't get it right. I believe #1 is auto & #2/3 are manual.

Darren's shots and edits are awesome!
The only flash I have is the inbuilt one in my camera.. so the way I did it was by using incense and lighting the smoke from shining little torch from below against a dark background lol. Had my camera on a fast shutter set up on my tripod.. I think it was at.. 1/50 :/ Can't exactly remember.

You have created quite a different effect but I wouldn't give up. I really like the fluidity of the softer lighting and I think it is worth developing it further.
