It was through the window of the water taxi and so a bit blurry and distorted, but I like the feel it gave to the image: a bit dream-like. Square?! Heaven forbid! 
I think a crop that lost the patterns in the water at the bottom right would lose the sense of motion that I associate with the image; you can almost see the 'path' the taxi has taken.

I think you are right. The water disturbance connects you and the viewer to the people waiving.
