First attempt at long exposure

This is my first attempt at exposure, I believe shutter speed was around a second, its all hand held so its not the sharpest, will remember to pack a tripod if I try some slow shutter work next time but was just a test.

That's a cool shot. Its got a pinhole camera look about it, with the oof and all. What camera/film?

It looks like a pinhole camera as its handheld lol its on the Nikon D3100 with the kit lens, I was just passed the canal on the way back from the station after going into London.

Ah here are the setting for the shot:

ISO 100
22mm
F25
2 second exposure

The sky was very overcast and it had started to rain so the sky isn't the best, might try and work on the image again.

I would be using a tripod next time and see what I can get, the image taken was a bit over exposed as well, perhaps due to the metering of the lock rather than the sky.

Was just a test shot in passing to see if I could get that flowing look with the water.

Shutter speed was perfect, I think, to capture the flow of the water through the lock. Using a tripod or some other way to brace the camera would have improved the image immensely even making the streams of water moe defined.

Thanks Ralph, yeah I will get a tripod sorted at some point, I was just on the way back from the station and wanted to have a go. Might look at getting an ND filter of some sort as I think the lens is at its smallest aperture so the image wouldn't be as sharp as if it were at say F11 but with a filter.

I agree, the shutter speed was about right and you just need to find yourself a vintage wooden tripod!

I will get a tripod soon, think I saw some wooden tripods somewhere online for not a huge amount, I might initially go with a basic tripod - found one on Amazon which is apparently very good but not crazy expensive and has a ball head.
