Magical things these fossils. The bottom two, the grain of the wood fits very well as a backdrop. Pro Light's? Rob, looking forward to the results , get saving
I know what you mean though, as photography is about light and photographing objects our ceiling or yellow table top energy bulbs do not quite hack it.
I don't really go down the root of acquiring lights, reflectors, soft boxes, etc. Once started, where do you stop? Natural light for me, though these shots were taken at night, when any natural light had gone.
I like them and agree that the grain of thee table top makes a good backdrop. I find them a tiny bit low in contrast though and I'd prefer a bit more space at the bottom of the second two. Window light makes a great source, especially when the sun is low for this type of thing. A small reflector might be a useful addition though and maybe some black card to allow you to control the 'angle' of the light.
I cheat, I often photograph objects in the shade on a bright day, which gives total control, then brightened parts in Photoshop
No good for the above as its very dark in the shade at night

Rob, the other day I bought a torchlight of led lights, quite powerful. With that and a small reflex screen in white or silver / aluminium foil shall do a good treat. Cheating, I've never. What do you expect from a Cornishman
