some gators i found while in florida last week. the first was on the st johns river during a boat ride i took from blue spring state park. the second was in lake apopka wildlife dr.

Just curious Beth Carter ... how did you end up with the final second image? Did you see the final image in post ... did you previsualize the final image prior to releasing the shutter?

i was hoping for a shot like this before i went. it was luck that one swam by in the cold water. i wanted a black background instead of a white one. a circular polarizer probably would have darkened the water enough to push it to black, but i couldn't be bothered to get it out of the bag.

Maybe I was wrong to talk about the mood of the first photo, what strikes me most is the composition, the colours, the light. In my opinion it is an art photo. The second one is a nice shot, but it's something else. Just a personal opinion.
it's all good. i like hearing the opinions around here, they tend to be honest and real. personally i like the dark and moody matte look, even if it is a little more on the artsy side than wildlife photographers generally like.
