Nikon F4s, described on the bay as Excellent++ and £107.

I've long fancied having one, and now I do. One problem: I have no lenses. I'm in no hurry, I want to buy excellent-quality lenses, and will take my time.

Never had a Nikon before, so advice on lenses appreciated...

Yes, Pete, the first question would be manual or AF. The lazy part of me says AF, but I've read the old metal manual lenses are really excellent.

And who is Nikor? Related to Nikon? Good value?

Great camera.
If I were looking for lenses for it I would look at the early 'AF' and 'AF-D' Nikons. These are the lenses that you will get the most out of on that camera.
They look like this https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/lab_studio/5153315983/

The 'd' were the later ones, 'd' stands for distance and was a feature that fed distance info back to the camera and flash for more accurate flash power. You can tell a 'd' by the text on the side of the lens, visible in the photo on Flickr the 50mm reads "50mm 1.4 D"
You probably don't need the d versions, and the earlier ones are cheaper ... Just don't get stung shopping on eBay by buying a non d for d price, as many people do. There isn't much difference, but by rights the non d should be a bit cheaper.

The more modern "G" lenses won't AF on the f4, so don't buy one of those.

Erm ... What else???

The 35mm f2 AF is a great lens! Not as good as your Konica, but good non the less!

I'm selling all my Nikon gear at the mo and will be selling a 60mm afd micro - £110 to you (it has a slightly gravely mf, but it focuses fine
35mm f2 afd - has a crack in the focus ring. Works perfectly though. £100 to you
85mm 1.4d slight mark to lens coating on the front. But has no effect on photos - £450 to you

I also have a 50mm 1.2 ais (not AF) £250 to you

:)

I might take you up on one or two, Hamish. Doing some reading first. I feel like stepping out from fixed-lens cameras for a while. Also getting tired of my digital work...

No probs ...
"For a while" or more... Just thinking there may be a part ex to be done with a certain Konica I might have expressed a passing interest in once or twice... :D

If you want a cheap wide zoom the Tokina 19-35 f3.5-f4.5 is surprisingly good and takes 77mm filters. I also have a pair of Sigma macro lenses, 50mm f2.8 and 105mm f2.8. Both are similar to the D type from Nikon and can be had relatively cheap. The 50 is still current!

I thought the G lenses would AF but you had to use an auto mode to get control of the aperture. I have to confess that, although I own a F4 and have G lenses, I have never tried.

Hmm ... Perhaps they do. I thought it just had the screw driven AF on the early AF Nikons though
