I started with some early Cactus triggers that I modified and followed by some cheap double head units, which were OK but the range is only about 5m. I also have a couple of cheap optical receivers.
I've just bought some Pixel Kings to use with my Canon flashes although I haven't had a chance to use them yet. I also have a set of Elinchrom Speed tr/rx to use with an Elinchrom Quadra head.
There are pros and cons for most units listed Lighting Rumours but it usually comes down to how much are you willing to pay or which features are a "must have" for you. I wanted the ability to control flash power level remotely and the Pixel Kings were the cheapest units that support that feature, plus they have eTTL.
I use some hahnel ones and my sb900/su800 when i need that sort of function ... or a cable...
I do have a hanhel one though which I find to be pretty decent
How useful is ettl? how does it work??
eTTL is useful when the subject to camera distance isn't fixed or changes often e.g. at a wedding, whether your flash is on or off-camera.
I chose triggers that supported eTTL as they allow me to remotely control the power level of the flashes (which are in manual) - I think it's just a coincidence that they're eTTL
The on-camera flash was in eTTL mode in photos 8, 9, 10 and 11 in my Mayhem photos
Odins look very good and were on my shortlist but the price difference ruled them out for me - I got the Pixel King transmitter and receiver kit from HK delivered for £73, the Odins are more than double that (from a quick google search).
very useful, although for anyone already owning a set which basically works, reading that chart is like getting into the arms race. I expect I'll have to upgrade some day.
