Critique Welcomed Macro Experiment Result

Finally starting to get the hang of this old Hassy I think and had some time to play with the recently acquired macro lens and bellows. This image is not quite right, I know as I only had one light working and no modelling light so a bit difficult to focus but thought I would make my first image post so you can see what I'm trying to achieve. Hopefully, I can only get better at MF.dswanson-11.jpg

I recognise that seed! I have an example myself. :) - shot on a homemade camera onto paper -http://www.realphotographersforum.com/forum/threads/horned-seed.12617/

I like the lighting, it has revealed the texture very nicely. Personally I would have left a bit of space around the seed but as a macro shot it works quite well and its quite a tricky subject as there is a lot of depth to capture. I think the one thing that disturbs me is the seed coming towards the lens, maybe rotating the seed counterclockwise would have avoided that. I like it though.

I can see we have similar tastes in subject matter! I too have lots of weird seeds ;) I like your shot, very moody.

Thanks. You are quite right about the composition though. I was really struggling with trying to focus, working almost literally in the dark, and haven't yet quite got the hang of just how much of what you see in the viewfinder gets cropped. I agree also about the angle, partially due to not enough height whilst keeping the rig steady - it's a bit too big and unwieldy for a ball head I've found. This was with full extension plus 56mm tube.

I thought I had miss read for a second ... It does look like the sort of thing Pete would post!

Looks pretty good to me, though I see what Pete is saying, if this is just an "experiment", it's a pretty good start!
