Mask nation

Jim Kuo

The man in the hat
There are masked people on the streets everywhere in this city (for health reasons I presume), it's something that I imagine would freak out the general public in London. I have an unpublished small collection of similar type of pictures which I will find a home for shortly. This is the one Hamish picked out from my Flickr site.

Thanks for looking.

I believe that it is indeed for health reasons, Jim. I saw it years ago in Japan. My understanding is that if the have a cold they will wear the masks to avoid infecting others. Maybe its a social norm based on the crowds and the enforced proximity to others on trains and so on. In recent years I've seen it here in the US also,...but I think only Asian people doing so here. Nice shot!

It's interesting, the wearing of masks, it's an odd sight to say the least. I must agree with the biker & his mask, though if the woman didnt have a mask, you could assume the biker is a robber? Lol

This is the one I think is brilliant!
i like the idea the guy on the bike is eyeing her up despite not being able to see her face!
she has a sorta vacant look in her eyes, just staring forward like there is nothing going on around her...
There is tension that is almost sinister... If it was a film, the music would be tense for sure!

I think this maybe where you like different images to me Jim, all the street shots you take and like seem to have central subjects.
I wonder if the pride and thril of success in taking a daring image of someone in the street is a big factor in what makes an image for you?

Thanks Hamish and Pete.

You may be right about your analysis, Hamish. I will have a think and perhaps some new idea or approach would emerge. :)

Cool (as long as you didn't read it as a critisism - it wasn't supposed to be, just an observation...)

Please don't worry about "hurting my feelings", I find that honest feedback is very hard to come by, I really really welcome whatever critique I can get.

As you mentioned, I may have let the personal feeling I had at the time over influence my later editing process. Much appreciated for pointing it out!

No probs then I suppose... I'm not sure i meant it as a critique, but if you think it's a positive thing then that is I suppose hat matters :)

The timing so coool Jim
I was on public transport last week with a slight fever and tried to dissuade people sitting next to me whilst wishing i had thought ahead & gotten a such a mask.
