My new love

When one does comparisons even though one is content, yes I said content with ones equipment, there shall at times occur that the comparison sways against your favour. And it did the other day. When I got my pentaxes with their crystal clear pentaprisms, the fujis fell to the ground. Good cameras oh yes, but the viewfinder kind of became mirky in comparison. And as the Pentax cameras can absolutely compete with the Fujis, the latter had to go. But as a guy always striving for also a neat little camera, a little neater than the DSLR types, one in particular took to my heart. My new love which I have had the pleasure of playing around with already and it's up to the quality of any known camera that I care to mention. So everyone out there, eat your hearts out, here is my new love:D as well as my permanent one, made out with my new love.My new love, OMD EM10.jpg

Thanks for watching. The Fujis are dead, long live Olympus OMD EM 10.

Excellent Ivar. I have the EM-5 which you are aware of. I chose it at the time, this was prior to the fuji's arriving, for the compactness, but primarily for some of the fine lenses. Although not used much it is a far more responsive and high iso shooter than my 5D MK2 and is used when speed is required. I have some nice Olympus and Panasonic lenses . I soon picked up a few cheap adapters from e-bay and use my EF len's and the Jupiter 8 f2 looks and behaves wonderfully along with a 50mm Zeiss.
I see it is of a fancy green skinned variety, which no doubt helps. I do also find the swivel out screen very useful.

I really like it, but have only kit lens and the Panasonic 25mm/1,4. I do have converters though for canon eos, nikon and pentax. A 50mm/1,7 pentax as well as nikon 105mm/2,5 and a 85mm/1,8 eos are also a part of the arsenal. The green leather on it, is due to its launch as a special edition with a green leather strap. ( I seem to become posh now ). Since the shops proprietor is also my best man and long time friend, I was handed it on my birthday for a rediculous low price and could not say no. I'm afraid that my beloved Pentax shall be resting a bit too much. I must say that the kit lens is actually quite good. Cheers mate:). Oh forgot to tell, the display on it does not svivel, but can be tilted down flat and 45 degrees upwards. That's ok with me.

Nice to see Dave. It's actually not so much the camera, but more so the feeling each one has with their choice of camera and their enjoyment while using it I guess. I just could not help myself :D

Say Julian, with the eos adapter, are you able to change the aperture as you go along or do you have to stick to the largest aperture? It seems I cannot vary the aperture on mine but have to use in my case the 1,8 on the 85mm.

Ivar I have an EOS to m/4/3 adapter with a built in aperture. It works to a degree but at a certain point starts to output and vignette steeply. Not sure if I'd go that route again, but it can be used with the aperture fully open. As for the eos lenses. Yes I do shoot wide open. The Ef 400mm f5.6 is as wide as stopped down as far as I'd wish to go anyway on such a small sensor. The f1.8 is also obviously not as shallow as on a 35mm sensor either. But if i do wish for say f5.6 on the 85mm EF lens, I put it on my canon camera, switch it on, press the field of view preview button to the left of the lens mount and whilst holding it switch the camera of. The lens then holds the chosen F stop. Ok very convoluted procedure and not really practical on the fly, but possible if you know what you wish to shoot. The other lenses I use have aperture rings, so not a problem.

Thank you Julian. I do know about the eos setting the aperture on a canon body so as to maintain the aperture on a 4/3 and as you say, 1,8 on that lens is actually 3,6 on a 4/3 so the dof is therefore equivalent. Prefer the Olympus lenses and panasonic lenses for my little Ol'e. Have the kit lens, leica/panasonic 25/f1,4 as well as 75-300mm olympus. Pondering on buying one more same body. Hope everything goes well. Take care, "don't get stuck.";)

Yes , I have the Panasonic Leica Summilux DG 25mm F1.4, like the lens a lot. Other native lenses I have are the Olympus 45mm f1.8 a gorgeous lens, the 75mm f1.8 again a very good lens and along with the 45mm probably the sharpest lenses I own, The kit 12 - 50mm that came with the camera is ok , but the size and shape I find akward. I'd like a wide lens for the camera, at this moment the Panasonic Leica 15mm f1.7 is appealing as is the Olympus 12mm f2. They are costly however and a certain amount of bravery is needed to purchase them. Must put one or two Canon L's up for sale.
I wont get stuck ;)

So we have now established the fact that Julian shoots sparrows with a canon  and are you stuck with that? I thought in my bewilderment that you, as well as any bright lad and lassie becoming of age would look for light quality equipment that would be easy to travel around with. And then I detect that as one gets older, the bigger the arsenal of equipment he gets  well, well!

These were acquired when I was younger and full of prowess and proud as punch that I could flaunt such items as these long white canons, giving proof that I was a knowledgeable photographer;) and blame swimming, I wished to take phot's of my daughters competing and for that I have many fond memories. Yes I love my light bag with all three Merlins and a set of Lee filters, or sometimes a Merlin and the Oly with three lenses, the combinations are endless and most importantly, light.

It is nice to see how you put words to what many of us men especially have felt up through the years, feeling mucho. But I remember a wedding I was to shoot, and pulled out my Contax G at the time. They wondered if I was serious and a professional. You should have seen their faces. When the big Canon appeared, I was back in line with the big boys. Now Julian, here is my little bag of joy and sweetness. It contains one camera and three lenses ranging from 28 mm to 600mm and weighs next to nothing. I can even put in one extra body of the same sort. It is 23 tall x 18 cm wide.

At least it will not be mistaken for a camera bag ;)
