As you'll know if you read the lens dilemma thread, I bought a 24mm and sold my 18-55 and the 28-105,
And I was waiting to see if I needed a lens between my 50 and my 200. And was going to buy the sigma 50-200, it had a stabiliser and a high speed motor (though I later found out it wasn't ring type, so it's not that fast).
Well anyway after some deliberation I instead got a 70-300 from sigma. Reason being, the high speed motor isn't high speed, so the only other thing pulling me to the 50-200 is the stabiliser. I can live without it.
The 70-300 is an APO ? Which has something to do with coatings and reduced CA etc, and it's regarded as one of sigmas 'prosumer' ones apparently. The other thing that pulled me to this, is it can be used on full bodies too, whereas the 50-200 is crop sensor only - investing for the future.
And the main pull to the 70-300 is that it has a macro ability of 1:2 at 300mm . I know it's not great, but 1:2 is better than a magnification of something like 0.19x (1:5) on the 28-105 lol.
I've added these pictures, straight from iPhone. This lens extends like 9 foot! :O
I've given it a little test drive, the roofer across the road is probably a bit peed off, and I bet the neighbour isn't too impressed - he was putting his rubbish out
