I thought I would add in some test photos using the D3100 with my new 35mm f1.8G, images are shot RAW then converted with a bit of post processing.

Looking good David. I'm not familiar with that variant of chess! ;)

Thats only when the giant comes over to stay for the weekend :D

What I am impressed with using this lens is how nice it focuses (much quieter than the kit lens), the fact there is a manual override on the focus and the sharpness of the lens. Just shows what a prime lens can do against a zoom lens like the 18-55mm it came with. Also allowing for the aperture to be as open as f1.8 is really useful as it means that I can keep the ISO low to avoid the digital noise I dislike. I believe the lens is sharpest at around f4 to f5.6 which means its really usable, I did notice some chromatic aberration when shot against a white background but its really not noticable unless massivly zoomed.

I am really impressed with the detail of that bird bath, I have shot that with the kit lens and although it seems to look pretty good its such a massive difference between the lenses.

The last image of the bench is not HDR (don't have auto bracketing on the D3100) but you can see that everything is sharp and this is still being shot wide open.

I did read a review on Amazon that if you were going to buy 1 lens to add to your collection along with the 18-55mm kit lens this 35mm f1.8G is the lens to get. I believe that this is true, I don't really need a super long lens for anything I do and its just a great lens. Initially when I started looking at cameras and got a few film cameras I only got the D3100 as a basic DSLR as a training tool to learn about exposure etc using MF lenses. I am now nicely surprised that the camera is performing well now that it has some nice glass in front of it - invest in lenses not bodies :)
