Roller, or wheeled type bags/cases

Anyone use a Think Tank / Lowepro roller case? Do you like it. Does it prove adequate and strong enough for dragging through wet London streets etc?

Take a look at the kata website ...
They do some sort of modular system where you can attach wheels to a veriety of thier bags I think...
Unfortunately I cant claim to know much about it or have much experience other than having a kata bag that is very nice, and even has a hood that can be pulled over it to make it very water proof...

Yes, it has Velcro panels inside. The problem I have is that there are two long dividers that really need to be in place and then you section up the rest. The also tapers slightly which makes things tricky. I'm using it as static storage and hadn't really thought about selling it. I'll try to take some pictures at the weekend so you can see what I mean. I find Peli cases much more satisfactory even when flying.

OK, not sure what use this will be but at least this is a bit more crammed than the demo's on the Think Tank site. The bag is now used just as storage and so has a bit of a mixture of things in. In Germany I use other cases (Lightware and Peli) and keep things system specific. At work in the UK the gear lives in drawers but this case contains a jumble of things that drifted home for some reason. I bought the low divider set for this bag (Airport International V2.0) but, although this allowed me to put a laptop inside (as it is designed to) I then couldn't fit a D3 where I wanted 'cos it was too tall. So for use as storage I've reverted to the standard dividers. For smaller bodies (eg D700) this would not be a problem. I found the curves at the ends and the space taken up by the handle (reduces the depth in the middle) to be difficult to work around. The 1510 from Peli is much easier to organise in this respect.

It's not that it's a bad bag (although the wheels are very close to the bottom of the bag and you'd probably end up sweeping the streets with it - it really is better suited to airports), it's just that I read so many claims about how good it was and all this philosophy stuff about being designed by working photographers that I was disappointed by the reality I think. This was compounded when I discovered my Ebony wouldn't fit because of the handle issue (they quoted the maximum depth).

I think there are better solutions out there especially if you aren't flying and I'd certainly look at the Lowepro (although again the clearance under the wheels looks low). Maybe the Kata wheel frame would solve this with one of their bags. I know that the Lightware system won't (I have a wheel set for their carry-one bag and it is just a useless design as you have to un-thread the securing straps to open the case! That is a damn nuisance. And there's no clearance).

Peli bags also don't have much clearance but they seem to handle quite a lot of abuse although it always feels like the handle might snap when you're dragging a heavy bag over a rough surface - mine hasn't yet though. One of the bigger ones of those might suit you - and you can always sit on it when you're worn out from dragging it around - or stand on to get a bit more height (or use it to transport the chopped up body parts of an irritating client who keeps changing their mind to the nearest canal for disposal safe in he knowledge that it's water tight and so won't leave a tell-tale trail of blood spots on the pavement!! - I've had a bad week too!! ;)).

Anyway hope that helps a bit.

Very helpful

Thank you very much for that. You've brought new issues to mind which had not really occured to me. The ground clearance being the main one.
I'm more likely to be dragging gear through city streets than airport, so you're point is extremely relevant.

In will look at other brands and other styles, but it's not a simple choice at all. I need a bag which is easy to lug around with all my event exhibition gear in it, but another to actually do the leg work with. Two bags? I hope not!
Blimey, fancy being stuck for what bag to buy. It sounds ridiculous, but it's not. :(

.....Again, many thanks!!! :)

I have gone with the Pelican roller as my roller of choice.

I have two sizes - a full system case for the whole enchilada, and a smaller carry-on sized roller for flying.

Built like tanks - wouldn't trust anything else for rollers (for shoulder bags I use Billingham)
