Soft Morning Light

Thanks, Chris, especially for introducing me to Hammershoi, who I’ve just looked up. He certainly was a master of the softly-lit interior. Very photographic. It might be something I can explore more. The light has to be “just so”, and there’s no way you can manufacture it.

I see he was a great admirer of Whistler, who also had a photo-compositional feel to his work. I do like Whistler’s work a lot, and highly recommend the quite recent biography of his mother, an extraordinary woman.

Mischa and I discovered him in the National Gallery in Copenhagen about 18 years ago and I was captivated immediately by his work. This is a documentary about him by Michael Palin which was on TV a few years ago.
