Calla Lily Solarised Cala

A quick experiment from late this afternoon to try out the idea. The lily was lit the same way as the ones taken with the Cambo but this time the image was made using the DIY camera. An aperture of f/11 was used and the exposure was for 2 minutes. The paper negative was solarised using a small flash during development and was then scanned after fixing, washing and drying. The image was inverted in LR and edited for tone etc in SilverFX Pro 2. Definitely worth exploring further tomorrow I think.

The problem with using flash as the light source when solarising is that it casts sharp shadows of any dust etc floating on the surface of the developer. It has also increased the exposure of the highlight on the flower (note that I did not left to right correct the negative - I liked it this way round). Tomorrow I will reduce exposure by one stop, improve focus and, maybe, look at an alternative source of light for the solarisation steep or at least diffuse the flash. Here I have used a texture to help hide the bits etc.

I also lightened the darker band created by the flash rather than darkening the rest, resulting in the lighter image, which I prefer.

Well, it's very different from the first, for sure. The dark online (which I liked) has gone () but the detail in the stem has appeared, and overall the flower is less hidden. It does look flat, though, against the background, compared to the first version. I must admit to quite liking the marks, the black specks, which look more natural (obviously) than the digital filters used to imitate this effect. Good stuff, master.
