Some *cough* Lubitel 166b Photos :)

you weren't joking about the swirlyness of the shots, were you?! That's swirlytastic! The camera seems sharper than I was expecting, so now really really looking forward to mine arriving.

The double-exposure is very effective, but I love the first shot, her expression seems to be saying "..mmm... not sure about this..."

Yeah they are petty good cameras for the money really ... Short of the light leaks ... :)

She loved the swing ... It's the camera in her face that gets a mixed response :)

light leaks you say? mmm. I'll check before I put any film in, got some spare foam strips might come in handy.

Yeah, that's what causes the red at the side of the frames. Light gets in the back door around the sides, then because the light shines through the back red layer of the film it shows as red on the results.

There's nothing wrong with an old Lubitel - I must dust mine off some time. Mine leaks too, but I bought it new for about £13 around 1980. Lovely shots @Hamish Gill - may I ask how you made the scans? That's the main thing putting me off because I can't use the dedicated film scanner and I had some real issues with our cheap flatbed. The shadows can be a real pain and the software was too expensive. I used the trial version in the end and have to put up with watermarks all over the place... :(

I think Photo imaging north Wales did them for me ... If it's colour MF there isn't much chance I would have done it my self. It was a long time ago though, so I couldn't be completely certain!

Which flatbed are you using? I just stick with the software that came with mine - 'epson scan' it does everything I need and the output is plenty good enough for me!

GREAT photo's Hamish..!! What film was used for those images? Hmmm a cheap way to get into medium format photography.

Can you buy the Lubitel's new? what's the average cost? hmmm very tempted alright.

If you are completely insane you can spend nearly £300 on a new one from lomo

http://shop.lomography.com/gb/cameras/lubitel-cameras

Or if you have any sense at all you can go on eBay and find them selling for as little as £10

Buying new or referbished from lomo doesn't nessasarily carry any greater chance of getting a working one either

I imagine my advised course of action is relatively clear ;)

Oh... it's been so long, I don't remember. We have a cheap Epson flatbed I think. I recall the problem was either put it in the special slide holder (which is obviously too small), or you try and scan it on the glass. I think the Epson software refused to work with it, but that is probably many years old now. The trial software did work, but only with a lot of fiddling and you had to pay a lot to remove the watermarks. There are known problems I believe in getting into the shadows with MF film, but the recommended scanners were very expensive when I last looked. I do like my Lubitel, but I wouldn't use it enough to spend any money on the scans.

If @Peter McCullough is really interested and could offer a good home, then I would be happy to see mine used again. It's been well cared for, has a little filter to protect the lens and has only been used with two rolls of film :)
