Spit ‘n’ polish

When this old timer arrived recently, the lens didn’t look too bad at first inspection, just needed a gentle clean with my usual gentle, non damaging routine to try and remove the discoloured splodges on the front element… or so I thought. It had no noticeable effect and, on closer inspection, I could see why. Scratches all over and the lighter areas are where the coating has gone completely, back bare glass. The edges of theses ares appear to show signs of the remaining coating starting to delaminate. Fortunately the glass itself underneath looks ok. The rear element is better, but still has myriad fine scratches. The only hopeful thing is that, looking through the lens away from a bright light source the damage isn’t too obvious and I’m optimistic about getting some reasonably useable pics from it. The shutter works ok and the rest of the camera seems in good condition for it’s age. (Nettar 515/2, early/mid ‘50s)
