I was alerted to this software from a fellow photographer via Facebook.
digiCamControl - DSLR camera remote control open source software | digiCamControl
I have tried it with my DSLR and also connected my iPhone as a remote. The software, on my laptop, worked really well. It gives control over the variable settings in the mode your camera is in. Time lapse and movie recording is also available. You may need to download the codec's (a link is in the software. There is also an online manual. Live View is also part of the package. Another feature is focus stacking which I have not tried.
Remote is just the basic settings, auto and manual focus, live view zoom and taking the shot.
For a free piece of software it is impressive and easy to use. The remote via a tablet or smartphone is useful though not so impressive.
It is all set up for Nikon and works well with mine. It does not have support for Canon or other cameras except in sone limited circumstances.
Well worth a try.
