The Philosopher's Toe

David Hume was one of the towering geniuses of the Scottish Enlightenment, a philosopher who wasn't afraid to take on the powers of the Church and State. He was a resolute atheist.

He might be perplexed, then, to realise that he is on his way to sainthood...

Japanese tourists - and it is mainly the Japanese variety - have taken to rubbing his big toe, in a kind of good luck gesture. I've seen queues - yes, queues - of tourists lining up to be photographed rubbing his toe. Extraordinary. It won't be long before Christians and Muslims start fighting over him...

This is a poor photo, for which I apologise - but the thought of being watched by dozens of tourists as I try to get a good exposure, with just the right amount of dof - no, I won't go through that again...

If the actions of what people do when they visit this guys statue is the focus...I wouldn't label it a "poor photo". I'd call it informational...and it was for me. Sometimes we all get to technical to enjoy the meaning...IMHO of course.
