Oh and Vuescan made a complete pig's ear of the scan even though the negative was pretty well bang on. There are no real adjustments with it and the slight shadows were plunged into darkness. So I have install the Microtek software on a VM and that did it perfectly (and quicker).

The leafy things cast no shadow! So the shadow has been genetically altered. Very amazing!

I like these images a lot, Pete. No idea how you illuminate them or what the background looks like but whatever it is it works a treat.

By the way, you may wish to feed him; he looks hungry.;)

Thanks Brian. The background is a 40 x 40 print turned over and with a box standing behind to create a curve. The only light is diffused daylight from a skylight. It was clearly so soft that the leaves cast no shadow at all and I guess the curve adds some fill - plus, these paper negatives do seem to have their quirks!

Just nipping out to pick up some Anchovies! ;)

There is something odly bleak about this ...
Not sure why, but the first thin that came into my head was the film 'walkabout'

my brain almost automatically superimposes a cracked dirt background ...

I haven't seen it since I was about 17-18ish ... I went through a period of watching lots of 70's films ... Walkabout and Dont Look Now are films that really stuck with me!
