Two Fishermen

Took to the harbour to catch some sun and a chin wag with a few people. Then shot Will putting a few box's of fish ashore, were Malcolm felt left out, so I obliged and took a quick snap. Fish since December 2013 have been very scarce with aid being offered to some of the inshore fishermen who are struggling in the west coasts of England and Wales. I cannot ever remember this happening before. At the end of April the inshore fishing usually does pick up, shellfish such as lobsters and crabs make their way closer to the coast, as do many of the species of prime fish that these fishermen rely upon, so they go out picking away in the hope things do improve.

Lovely shot of Will at work. He managed a lovely happy expression despite struggling with the sun in his eyes. Malc held a lovely relaxed pose for you and he comes across as a nice character to know.
Lovely pair of shots Julian.

Thank Tom. Yes two great guys. I worked a lot when young with Malcolm and before going of to Art School he lent me his boat for the summer so I could fish and get some money together to supplement my grant. Their is a great sense of community amongst the fishermen. That is not to say they do full out or thump each other at times. It is certainly a good way of life if you are prepared to work extremely hard. I took these around midday, Will had been out since midnight and after getting home, eating, a short sleep, they go out again that same evening. There are of course those days when they cannot get out, where they mend nets and drink a lot :)

I love these pictures and their types. The first one is absolutely the best thanks to the light, the character and the way you did it, as well as the story. Just love it. Big cheers.:)

Agree with everything stated previously. Smashing portraits the two of them, Julian. Poignant, too, considering the difficulties they have getting a good catch.

Brilliant, Julian. Clearly they like you as a person, and trust you as a photographer. Contrast this with the reception I got yesterday from crab fishermen in Fife! Very cold and frosty, and I'm not talking about the weather. These shots are superb.

Thanks Rob. You need to ask them nhen "ebb" tide is or is the tide "flooding" then they'll know you have some affinity with there world. Don't ask how their crabs are ;)

These are great, Julien. It seems you have really captured something in number 2 though, such an incredibly warm portrait.

Thanks Paul, yes very old friend, got up to lots of mischief as youngsters as well as sailing the high sea's in storms that will either build strong bonds of trust or otherwise.
