Critique Welcomed View Of London At Night From The Shard

The Shard is quite an imposing structure in London and my other half and I went there last week for the first time, just to have a drink and see what the view was like. Well, even from the restaurants situated on the 32nd floor (about halfway up) it was amazing!

We managed to get a small table near the window and I plonked my Fuji X-Pro 1 down to see if I could get a long exposure. I think I was quite fortunate in that where we were sat gave a nice composition. You can even see the moon poking out behind the buildings...it's a pity it wasn't just a minute later and or it would have risen right into the sky.

I'm thinking of making a large print (maybe A3 size) on Giclée or canvas and would welcome C&C on this pic - not just the image, but whether you think it would look better on fine art paper or canvas?

Thanks folks :)

Well first, I would straighten the horizon ;)

I think it's a great night cityscape and would tend to print it on Baryta type glossy or slight lustre paper rather than canvas or matte due to the incredible detail in the shot. I personally don't think this is the type of thing that goes with canvas.

That's awesome! I agree with the advice above - canvas wouldn't do this justice.

What he said ^

LOL - yes, my attempt at keeping the camera straight on the table didn't work did it :p:)

Apart from the dodgy horizon, is the pic good enough as it is for printing?

Thanks for all the great comments folks!

Thanks Pete and Beth. My first thought was that the moon looks a bit weird as it is and that I wished it had come out more, but I guess it's an unusual position to what we normally see in photos.

I think it's a marvelously good picture and now I know that there are possibilities for the public to enter this building. Look out for competition;) Canvas is a no no in my book in a picture this detailed as others already have told you. Just great!!!

Thanks Ivar. Actually, most of my long exposures are improvised as I use anything I have to keep the camera still - tables, ledges, handbags :D

You'll have great opportunities for pics at the Shard as the views are truly amazing, but even without the pics, I'm sure you'll have a good time there and I'd recommend it to anyone.
