8mm Film back from processing

My first two reels taken with the 50 year old Eumig C3M camera came back from processing and scanning yesterday. One reel is my youngest grand-baby's birthday party, so I'll edit that up separately.

So here, fifty years in the making, with a budget of indescribable size, I present...

Standard 8 - The Movie :p

Hey, at least it still worked!

Great stuff Chris, it's not anywhere as bad you you make out. From what I remember looking at the old cine films my dad made quality seems to be what was normally achievable and it has that retro feel. Cine films always seem nostalgic.

Fantastic Chris. Complete with authentic dust and scratches!! Love the muted colours and softness. Some people would spend hours in post-production trying to achieve that! Now, how come that is more engaging than it would be if shot on a modern camcorder?

Nice Chris, Santa Barbara I believe, from memory?

You managed to avoid the trick my dad always had, which was to pan across a scene from left to right, hover and then pan back across from right to left, then stop filming...

DId you do any editing/splicing, or is it just as you filmed it?

Tim - a little further South in Oceanside, but a very similar vibe :)

This is straight from the camera, no edits other than titles front and back - it's the first 25 ft of film from roll #1

Each roll gets you 50 ft total, as you flip it half-way through, and expose the other half of the 16mm master - this is then split into 8mm film during processing.

Here's the 2nd reel - Addy's 1st birthday party at the park :)

Unfortunately I can't watch reel 2 in Germany as the music content has not been granted publishing rights! So, if there's a silent version (maybe you should speed it up and cut a custard pie fight in - well, it's a children's party so that's probably there anyway, right!).

Paul - it is an interesting reaction - not sure if it's memory of old cine films, or something that's inherent in every cine film. The fact that people move differently on fim may be a factor, and the lack of soundtrack of course. Any other ideas?

Pete - I used a David Gray track as the soundtrack, and the YouTube automated music police detected that, and then notified me that it would prevent playback in Germany... very strange.

Not to be deterred, I've uploaded a version for you on my MobileMe space - :

Thanks Chris. Again, very atmospheric (apart from being upside down and back-to-front! - I assume it is OK at your end). That's true though isn't it, movement is different. I guess the latency of the image compared with the gate speed is not quite enough to fool the brain into thinking the movement is continuous. Maybe coupled with a bit of inaccuracy of speed.

Pete - are you pulling my leg

Looks fine from this end :p

And on QT in IE8 under WinXp (as a VM on OS X) it is fine as is Firefox 5 under WinXP. It seems to be a Firefox on Mac issue. What are you using? Oh not it's not! It is fine in Firefox on my MBP but not on the MacPro. Both running latest OS X and Firefox. How strange - I will investigate!

Glad to have provided test material to uncover a bug on your MacPro! LOL

I tend to use Safari

OK, now all is fine. Installed one update (nothing to do with the problem and has only just been released - something for you to do this evening now :)) and re-started. For some reason the monitor order and profiles were now jumbled up (I guess after the update although it has never happened before - I use 3 profiled monitors, one a SpectraView). Put them back in the right order and ran Firefox again. And now the video is correct. Goodness knows why!

Undocumented feature! LOL

I've heard that if you have a mac and located in Germany they are so wonderful you just shout "SHNELL SHNELL" loudly and the film speeds up.

Apologies for the off beat humour............
