A Couple of Sunsets

The canon 500d definately had the standard kit lens which was the 18-55mm and the lens I used was my 14-42mm. Id hate to question the maths, but the experience of actually establishing the difference myself and with a collegue has gained my confident stand of ground. Does it help that I've mentioned that it's a canon 500d? Does that change anything? I don't know if there's anything that helps the theory. I do appreciated that you know what your talking about when it comes to comparisons of full frame, 4/3 sensors etc, however, from the experience, I can achieve a substantial and noticably wider coverage with the standard lens I use than the canon standard. :p

I'm baffled mate!
I'm certainly not going to deny you you experience, but something is amiss, there must be some variable in the circumstance that one of us is missing...
I'll have to get hold of the d30 I have been offered, I have a 18-55 canon lens here. We can check again sometime... I'm intrigued to find out what is going on!

Me too, I understand the theory, but putting it to the test revealed something else. I'll get Curt (the man with the cam) to come round mine tomorrow and post some pictures to give you a gist of what I'm talking about. :p

Hey guys haven't got around to coming on here in a while but just reading through this thread I can definitely back Dan on the fact that his 14mm is wider than my 18-55 canon kit lens. In reference to the pano tower we really did see a difference in width and upon our many photo trips there have often been occasions where we have achieved wider landscapes on the oly. I suppose a decent test should tell haha! All I know, is that my 8mm is wider full stop, and I currently love the fun I can have with it! Muahahah hehe!

I have no shooting experience of either 500d or e600 so I can only bow to experience ...
I'd def like to see proof though as the facts based on specs remain
14 x 2 = 28
18 x 1.6 = 28.8
I've seen canon aps-c quoted as 1.62x crop
On that merit
18 x 1.62 = 29.16

There is a difference there, no doubting it, but in real life I'd be supprised if this effect would be that noticeable

Were these tests from the end photo or from view through vf?
Some cameras offer less coverage though the finder but differences are again negligible ...

Hahaha!! I won't cheat Hamish. That's not in my nature. :) that's a promise!!
