And back to Nikon it goes again...

I dont use my Nikon CLS (creative lighting system) kit very much ... but I have it because of how useful it can be in that odd situation!

I have probably only used it 3 times in the last 6 months since my D3 came back from its repair .. but every time I have noticed it doesn't always work as it should.... although I have always assumed human error to be the reason...

So Sunday afternoon I set it all up in the dining room and set to testing it.

As it turns out there is a fault with the D3 ...
Press the shutter and the SU-800 fires fires all 4 sb-r200's and the sb-600 as it should but 50% of the time it is out of sync with the shutter; which is obviously pretty useless!

So... first thing this morning on the phone to Nikon I explain this issue to the nice man and he tells me "The Nikon CLS is foolproof, there is no setting that could be making this happen, the camera is faulty!"
great, so is it going to be fixed under the warranty of the last repair?
well, hopefully yes! it has 6 days left on the 6 month repair warranty ... I sent it special delivery today ...
Cross them photo taking fingers for me people, I certainly don't have another £350 to fix it this time round!

After last time I sent this d3 to Nikon's UK service centre (380 Richmond Road) I lost pretty much most of my confidence in them ... I hope they redeem them selves this time!

(... here is what happened last time ... http://www.realphotographersforum.com/threads/616-Nikon-Repair-Service-in-Surrey-My-Experience)

(and for those with no idea what im banging on about - this is the flash kit in question http://www.europe-nikon.com/en_GB/product/speedlights/commander-kit-r1c1 )

Good luck Hamish.

I use the same setup but with 3 x SB200 and the SU 800 commander module. But only for macro / technical shots. Never had any problems, again attached to a D3. Will be interested to hear how you get on. As to luck, have you ever considered sacrificing a chicken? Works in Voodoo I've heard! ;)

Very odd - you sure there isn't some high speed sync setting or second curtain sync setting that needs attention?
