My guess is the white box with graffitti pulled you in. Or the graffitti on the wall on the left, maybe. The alley could pass for Roman era place if not for white box and plastic bag. Lovely atmospheric image, Pete!

No wonder it drew you in Pete. Could be there hours so many things to photograph.
In someways it looks something from Charles Dickens.
 
I like photos that ask questions, such as this one.

Where are the two ladies going? What are they doing in the alley? Where does the alley end?

There is a sense of mystery to this shot, while also maintaining just a hint of tension. I think it is the lighting on the walls along with the body language of the two ladies that really makes this shot stand out.
