Apple Picking in Julian CA

Went up into the mountains today, in search of apples, and fall color.

Didn't find much fall color, but did get to pick some delicious apples from one of the local orchards ;)

The nearest thing to fall color - dead sunflowers in front of a red barn

Thanks Brian - it was not at all fall-like today, as it was 80+ degrees in Julian - but the grand-kids enjoyed running around and eating as many apples as possible.

They still had room for Mom's apple pie and ice cream of course! :) :)

I had my piece of pie cold, with a nice slice of sharp cheddar cheese - the locals thought I was insane!

Yeah yeah, you'll be putting cinnamon in them next!

Another shot from the orchard - 22 Jon (Row 22, Apple type Jonathan)

Funny you say that. My wife is French, as you know, and she HATES that Americans seem to put cinnamon in everything.

My nephew went back to Blighty after visiting us, and told my mum that he preferred the Julian apple pies with cinnamon, to the pies she made without cinnamon...

He was nearly struck from the will for that comment! ;)

Mum now makes two apple pies each time - one for the traditional Brits, and one for those corrupted by the colonials :)

Chris,...I'd like to comment in particular here on the Row 22 photo as well as the ones of the anti-frost fan and the pie box.

To me these three are wonderful non-traditional images. (Well,...the pie box [and the apples in the first shot] could be in an advertizement somewhere--very professional looking images.)

After I commented yesterday regarding the sunflowers and the one with the wee lassie, I regretted not mentioning the anti-frost fan. Trooth is I would never have thought of photographing that fan, or the row 22 sign. But you've shot them from an aspect that makes otherwise mundane subjects very worthwhile images. And of course, the definition of JON 22 adds much to what's going on outside that frame.

Great stuff Chris! I am learning a lot about what makes for good images thanks to you and the other fine photographers on RPF.
