Beach Pebbles

I visited this interesting beach when I received the Sigma DP3. I was a bit disappointed as the scene really needed a wider view, which is why I promised myself to get the DP1. I've yet to return there with the wider lens but will when the weather bucks up a bit. This beach in the past was often visit by people who took away the large egg shaped granite stones for ornaments or the garden. This of late has been frowned upon by the locals and now culprits are taken and hung over the high cliffs by their legs and have to promise not to take these stones again. So I am told ;)

I like the first the most, where they really do look like alien bubbles, almost alive. Beautiful, Julian. Good to see you back out and about.

I second Robs opinion and nice to see activity from your side. I hope everything is as good as it it should be. Cheers. Pondering on buying a pana g3, new for 300 £ instead of the sigma. Just pondering.:)

I really like these Julian and am staggered that you managed to focus whilst being held upside down over the edge.;)

As an aside, because of you and the Edinburgh Correspondent, I am intrigued by the Merrills.

I have read extensively, kid myself that I know all the pitfalls and pluses but remain mesmerised by the detail they produce in the hands of experts like you and Rob.
If you could only have one, which would you choose?

I'm certainly no expert, and don't yet have the DP3, but so far I'm using the DP2 more than the DP1. It does seem a little sharper.

Thank you Rob. As far as I am concerned you are an expert ...or did I mean expat!

Everything I have read points to the DP2 being sharper than the DP1 but the DP3 seems to get the most favourable press. I ask as I want to get a Merrill and it will only be one as I am truly pushing my luck on the camera side of life.
In addition, they seem to be the only ones on back order at the mo which suggests that demand has far outstripped supply.

Thank you Rob on both accounts. The cliff behind is full of these stones which drop to the beach when the sea erodes the land.
This can be seen on the left side of this photo.

Thanks Ivar. Interesting. I have the m4/3 OM-D EM-5 and some superb lenses with it, such as the Olympus 75 f.8. Love the camera and do use it for speed. Yet the Sigma's are a very different camera in what they produce, I can understand the reluctance of many to take that step. It took me about four years to take the plunge. My understanding, although the newer m4/3 cameras are outstanding the older ones such as the G3 are also very capable.

Thank you Pat

If I could only have one I'd have the DP2, as an all round focal length. It s definitely sharper than the Dp1 but that is par for the course, generally speaking of wide angle lenses. The Dp3 as far as resolution goes is sometimes mind blowing, yet here the focal length helps, also the DP3 colours are slightly improved/ easier to control. The new Quattro Dp1 will have a new designed lens to improve that cameras. Also the DP Quattro according to Sigma has 30% more resolution, what that means in practise we will find out. I wonder if buying a DP Merrill here for £339 is not such a bad idea, I am sure it could be sold without too much of a loss. People will always hark back to the Original Merrill when the Quattro is out, being the last in a line of a particular sensor. .
