Ok, this isn't a good photo I know. I was a very quick "turn on the camera fast, focus and shoot" shot. Manual focus 35mm Samyang lens etc...

It's badly lit and I used an iso of 1000. It's a family birthday of a 2 year old recently. It's not pin sharpe, but it's quirky enough.

I like this very much and it has huge charm about it. From the shallow focus with the right eye (with a nice catch-light in it) and flame in focus. It has narrative, lovely tones and an appealing composition. I think it worth maybe trying to lessen the impact of the lamp and the window and maybe some gentle noise reduction in selected areas but, even as is, I like it a lot.

I'd say this is pretty damned good. The notion that every photo needs to be technically perfect and tack sharp in focus is just a myth and would make for pretty boring photos at the end of the day. Photography is all about capturing a key moment and conveying emotions and feelings. In the case of this one, you've managed to do that in spades... it's also pretty good, technically. Well done.
