Black and White

Nice image, Geoff, and a very strange building. What is it?
Strange things happen with your attachments, @Geoff Chaplin. First, they don't show up in the forum and I wonder why. Perhaps @Pete Askew or @Hamish Gill could answer that?
Also, I see that this image is not particularly large (measured in pixels) and seems heavily compressed judging by the artefacts one can see in the sky shading, but despite this it weighs 1 MB, much more than you would expect. Strange.

That can happen (or it has to me) if you attach it, then remove the image (by cutting or even back-spacing it I think). The actual attachment is still there but the image is not, until you insert it again.
Sorry, not very clear!

I'm not sure if I'm doing something differently but for me if I click on the attachment, then again on the image, it shows up as pretty big dimensions, and downloading it confirms that. And this would suggest it is in fact using quite heavy JPEG compression to achieve the 1MB file size.

Of course, I suppose this is all a little irrelevant to actual image which I like very much, but it's interesting.

I'm stupid, the image is large! It was me using the wrong click in the wrong application, thinking I was seeing it in full-size.

You hit all the nails on the head here! Yes my images won't attach normally. In order to get under 1mb I need to compress the scanned image to about 10%, which causes horrible artefacts to the extent that I decide not to publish most.

The building is the local viewpoint, and houses a water store underground to supply the neighbouring farms and houses.

@Geoff Chaplin. To keep the weight of the image under 1 MB, I think the best thing to do is to compromise between the size in pixels and JPEG compression. As far as I have been able to ascertain, an image reduced to 2000 px on the side and with 85% JPEG compression generally stays under 1 MB, does not show any noticeable artefacts and is also enjoyable on a PC monitor.
