Canon 1100D with m42 lens for macro.

Hi folks, a quick question if I may.
I used to do some macro with a Zenit last century, still have the setup (and the Zenit ;) ), and have bought an M42 adapter for the 1100D. I have the extension tube set which all works great (the M42 lens can be stopped down manually.)
I notice some people use a reversing ring as well as the tubes. What is the advantage of using a reversing ring along with tubes? Does it just increase the magnification over the tubes? Any other tips for M42/Canon setup?
Many thanks.

One caution. The delicate part of the lens will now be stuck out front for all the world to abuse. Be very careful when using a reversed lens.
