Canon FD lens repair

I have a Canon FD fit lens (1.8) which is a nice lens, except there is some aberration at certain apertures. Question is; should I have a look inside it? It wouldn't be a huge loss if I trashed it, I might learn something (i.e. don't dismantle lenses :) ) and there is an outside chance that I might fix it. I do wonder what is causing he aberration though; perhaps it has been dropped at some stage in its long career, although there are no signs of damage externally.

I found this for a similar Canon lens: Canon FD Lens Service

Anyone else managed a similar repair?
Many thanks.

Thanks for the encouragement and the Youtube links, Hamish. The EOS shutter video is interesting too. When I am released from the decorating at home, I will attempt a repair on the lens as there is little to lose. I believe something must be out of alignment to give the uneven focus effect.

As an aside, I used to have a book (photocopied) by an American camera repair technician which has sadly got lost over the years. It was full of interesting/useful repair information and I would like to get another copy. Does anybody know the book to which I refer, and could they please remind me of either the author or the title?
Many Thanks

I bought a pentacon 50mm 2.8 pancake off ebay which was ridden with mould and dust for dirt cheap, just to give lens repair a go, yes it's not quite a repair, nor did it involve re-aligning anything, but it was a fun little day and it turned out that it was only the 1st (backside) and 2nd (frontside) elements that were filthy, and similarly with the rear 1st and second. Though I did take apart the aperture blades to give them a wipe over (was a struggle to put back mind you) but it all works now, clean and clear. :)

There's a thought. I might well look for a really rough same type lens on ebay and give that a go first :) Whilst I paid little for the lens in question, it is in good nick overall with this one annoying trait. I bet if used when making smallish prints that the efect wouldn't even be noticable.

Another thought; if the lens mount on a camera body was a couple of thou out of aligmnment, how significant an effect would this have on the photo?
