Canon have just reached a milestone in EF lens production - they just passed 90 Million lenses!

They added the last 10 million lenses to the total in just 9 months - that's over 37,000 lenses a day!

The EF lens series began in 1987 at the Utsunomiya Plant, Japan, when the series was introduced together with the EOS SLR camera system.

Since then, the global demand for Canon’s EOS products and lenses has continued to gather pace and in 2011 there was only nine months between the increase from 60 to 70 million units manufactured.

  • 1995: Production of EF lenses surpasses 10 million units.
  • 2001: Production of EF lenses surpasses 20 million units.
  • 2006: 30 million EF lenses produced.
  • 2008: 40 million-unit milestone reached in April.
  • 2009: 50 million units produced.
  • 2011: 60 million units reached in January.
  • 2011: Production of EF lenses rises by 10 million in just nine months to reach the 70 million mark in October.
  • 2012: 80 million units reached in August.

Wonder how many Nikon have produced as they hav't faffed around with the mount lol.

They'd reached 75 million Nikkor lenses in November last year. So they are way behind. Mind, if we use just RPF as a model, half of Canon's lenses are probably to replace the ones that photographers have dropped (a clumsy bunch these Canon owners!). ;)

Quality not quantity *is careful with his 100 year old Carl Ziess London* they don't make them like they used to.

Well - this success does present Canon with a huge issue moving forward

It's such a big 'cash cow' that they will find it very hard to develop new mirror-less systems that might eat into the EF lens market.

You can already see how it's held them back - the EOS M is a bit of a joke, and the attempt to produce a miniature DSLR looks a rather odd idea (Other than it preserves the EF lens line)

I'm not sure how much I couldn't give a ****? It's 9 or 10 out of 10 ... I'm gonna go with 10
