Chosen flashgun.

Today, my Nan and grandad dragged me into LCE by the ear and threatened me their love to expand to my Nikon collection. I couldn't refuse as guilt would set in.

I looked at the SB-910 which is a MONSTER! It's massive, and has a big price tag.
Then also looked at the SB-700, which is a comfortable size, and within my (nans) budget.

The SB-910 is awesome by what was explained.
But in all honesty, I don't need anything that big... So I went for the SB-700 being a downsized version of the 910.

Works very well! :)

nice choice..........i chose that one 2 when i moved to Nikon not used it much yet, the screen & menu system seems pretty straight forward and pretty dam awesome..........just need to find time to play with it......!!

Why don't you get some R1C1s and go for a full array:

In LCE, I was told that the SB-910 is pretty much a larger version of the SB-700.
And pretty much what you are saying Lee, the 910 is pretty much for the extreme.
Although very very impressive, I couldn't see spending the extra cash would benefit myself.

And it was the good experience that I had at LCE that done it for me in regards of choice, I wasn't fobbed of by trying to be sold the most expensive flash they had although very appealing to part cash for it.
Instead, I explained what I'd needed it for and what I do and was advised to take the SB-700 to fit my circumstances in my photography role.

Bonus! And powerful it is enough for me! :)

Dan - props to your Nan & Grandad I'd say :)

DD and Daz let me know how you get on....been looking into flashguns again but cant make my mind up on either the Metz 52or the Nikon sd 700

I've jut sold the Metz 48 which I had for the Oly.
It is a FANTASIC bit of kit and had served me very well. The simplicity of it is just ridiculous.
The one thing I loved with it was the 'modelling mode' when discharging the flash (strobe). It's quite a fundamental tool when light painting.
I'm struggling to find one on the SB-700, if it does have one that is (maybe a bit of help required identifying the name of it on here would be brill)
So far, I've found that the SB-700 is brilliant, and surprisingly has an amazing coverage when needed.
If your not fussed about the 'strobe' mode then the SB-700 is fab. If you'd like it for your experimental purposes, the the Metz is the one.

Got flash?

I have 2 x SB-800 and 1 x SB-900 and still favour the 800. The 900 is a lot easier to set to remote but the 800s seem to nail the exposure better - especially in TTL-BL mode

I have not even picked up a Nikon Flashgun. What is the benefits of using the SB900 over a Metz? I don't use my Metz very often (but i am starting to use it more and more recently) but I wonder that if I did whether it would last very long. Are the Nikons more durable? Also what about the features of the Nikons are they actually things that people use, are they handy? The Metz can be controlled by the Commander and can be used on 2 channels plus has the various manual, TTL, BL functions.

In that note Paul regarding the Metz, I must say I've used the flashgun as much times (or not far off due to light painting and messing around with it) than that of my shutter count of my Oly which reached 30k.
Admittedly the Metz has lasted through all conditions, stresses, weddings, urban explores, and so forth. I did consider the Metz 58 with the dual flash (pan and swivel with front flash also) due to the reliability factor of Metz, but then I got excited with the N name and decided for that instead.
Paul, you won't go wrong with your Metz, it is super reliable, tough, and durable little beast that churns out similar if not better than that of the top branded flashes.
The question is for me of course, why did I go for another flash? ....... Simple answer.
I got bored.
