Christmas-New year 2011

Jim Kuo

The man in the hat
Spent the Xmas and new year holidays with Priya's family in Paris, we took some pictures in the process.

Here are some of the photos.

#1, the iconic landmark, I felt I was obligated to take at least one picture of it in Paris ;)

#2, a statue inside the residence hall of École normale supérieure. Writings on the wall are names of graduates who died in the war. Taken in near total darkness.

#3, plentiful fresh seafood stock in the market near where we stayed.

#4, fountain near Concorde, putting the ND1024 filter in use.

#10, Palais-Royal garden

#11, feeling enpowered by the ND1024 filter ;). This is a 20 sec exposure in broad day light.

I hope you've enjoyed the set.

Fan Effing Tastic set as usual Jim!
Liking the padlock ones, they're great. lol
I see your having fun with your ND I see?? I've recently bought an ND2-400 and it's fantastic!! I'm getting 60 sec exposures on f/22 in sunshine!!! Mental!! :D

What a wonderful set Jim. The stand out shots for me are the pair sitting in the chairs and the avenue of trees. The perfect Paris pictures - very Doisneau! I also love the tones in the list of the fallen. The lack of light and your handling of the image has created a very reverential look. I miss colour in the fish market even though I love the textures. What about a colour overlay? And the observational piece withe the columns is great (as is the semi-candid 'aunties'). All-in-all a super, super set.

Thanks all for the kind words. I am glad that you guys find these photos enjoyable :).

#5 (two guys lazying in the sun) is the shot of the trip for me I think. As soon as I saw them I knew there was something special, I was so thrilled to see the sunshine, subjects, and the shadows came together in the actual photo.

The person in the middle of the columns in #9 was a wonderful coincidence, I didn't see him until I brought up the photo on my computer screen :D.

#2 was a particularly difficult shot for me. When we were shown through the area (was in the evening), the light of the corridor was actually off. Luckily I had my Zeiss on so I was able to focus by eye and made the writings on the wall legible.

This set consists of a few selected pictures from a much larger album. So I do have a few other coloured fish pictures, #3 happens to be a B/W one :).

Jim - what a wonderful series - you were clearly on your A game over the holidays

I love the ghosts by the fountain - courtesy of the ND filter

The narrow DOF view of the padlocks is fabulous

The couple walking down the avenue of trees looks like you stole it from a gallery - my wife saw it and said 'isn't that an advert for something?' :)

And the two folks and the deck chairs - lovely observation, and use of shadows.

Thanks Brodie, Chris.

I didn't have my tripod for #4 at the time, so I placed my camera on the ground, resting on a lens cap to help angle it slightly upwards, and fixed the leveling/cropping in LR afterwards (I found liveview an invaluable tool). I must looked ultra weird to other tourists at the time :).

I am not aware of any advert similar to #10 (don't pay much attention to fashion adverts ;)), when I saw the neatly trimmed row of trees, I was more interested to capture the scene (square sky line...etc), the couple happened to be unintentional happy accident (again) :D.
