Closed or open?

I'm looking to get some light sealing foam for my OM10 after removing old MINGING sticky black tar like substance otherwise known as...... aged foam. Lol
I sort of understand the principal of open and closed cell foam, however, is it going to make any difference which one I choose? Why is there 2 types?
Foam is foam.... Right?

Here is a pic of my sticky adventure. Lol
As you can see..... The gunk in the seal channel :/ its all clear now anyway.

Excellent find, they have LOADS of sells on eBay too. They're very cheap and its something I'd love to get practical with.
However....... Why two types?? Closed and open cell foam? What's that all about?

The ones I fitted to my Canonet were closed cell foam I believe FWIW

Self adhesive on one side - cut with a stanley knife to size

Worked a treat :)

I'd go with the laser-cut, open cell strings I think. Closed cell foam is more resistant to compression and potentially has lower 'memory'. It may put undue pressure on the hinges etc and your camera was almost certainly fitted with open cell before. Closed cell foams are usually used where more compression resistance is required or where the material must be non-absorbent - think bath sponge vs foam mattress.

Just the answer I'm looking for Pete, thank you very much.
The foam that was in there seemed quite 'formed' with no 'memory' so after your explaination I shall get open cell foam to replace what was originally in there.
Muchos! :)
